The yard

Stone, mortar and the hand tools that go with them. Everything here is sold the way it gets used on site rather than the way it packs onto a pallet.

Questions about delivery and returns

What does delivery cost?

Stone ships on a pallet by kerbside delivery. Tools and mortar go by courier. Delivery is free over £250 on the mainland, otherwise it is quoted at checkout by weight.

Where do you deliver?

The UK mainland as standard. For anywhere else, ask before you order and it will be quoted.

How does stone arrive?

On a pallet, left at the kerb. Tools and mortar travel separately by courier, so they can arrive on a different day.

Will the driver carry it round the back?

No. Kerbside means kerbside, and a pallet of setts is not a two-person lift. Have somewhere to put it before it arrives.

What if it arrives damaged?

Photograph it on the pallet before you sign for it, and it will be replaced.

Can I return cut stone?

No. Cut stone is made to your measurements, so it is not returnable. Tools and unopened mortar have sixty days.

Stone, lime and hand tools from the yard

The yard is the working range: riven sandstone setts, natural hydraulic lime mortar and a forged bolster and lump hammer set. It is short on purpose. Each product is here because it gets used on the same kind of job, laying and repairing stone, and each one is sold in the unit that job is measured in.

Setts are sold by the square metre as laid, in 100mm and 140mm. Measure the area you are covering, allow for cuts, and order that figure. Lime mortar comes in 25kg bags in NHL 2, NHL 3.5 and NHL 5, pre-mixed with a washed sharp sand. The bolster set is three bolsters and a 3lb lump hammer, with a hickory or fibreglass handle.

Choosing a lime grade comes down to the wall. NHL 2 is for soft handmade brick and cob. NHL 3.5 covers most solid stone walling and repointing. NHL 5 is for positions that stay wet. On anything built before cement, a lime repair stays softer than the stone around it, so the mortar takes the movement and the stone does not.

Stone ships on a pallet by kerbside delivery, and tools and mortar go by courier. Delivery is free over £250 on the mainland and quoted by weight at checkout below that. Tools and unopened mortar can be returned within sixty days. Cut stone is made to your measurements and cannot be returned.
